Karen Kraco is a retired science teacher and writer whose work with the Northeaster newspaper put a “real” camera in her hands for the first time in 2016. Her lifetime of paying attention suddenly had an artistic outlet; she learned how powerful the visual can be in evoking emotions and making connections. In recent years, Karen has focused on urban wildlife photography, which she sees as a form of street photography: candids of creatures living their lives, much as we live ours, in spaces that are just as much theirs as ours. She especially enjoys winter “crowtography,” tracking the thousands of crows in Minneapolis as they converge every night in a huge roost.
