The Somali Museum is the home of traditional Somali arts in Minnesota. We are a 501c3 organization displaying a collection of over 1000 pieces, and offering educational programs about Somali traditional culture that are not offered anywhere else. The Somali Museum offers an unrivaled opportunity for Minnesotans of all backgrounds to encounter and learn about Somali traditional culture. See http://www.somalimuseum.org.
Presented by Maryan Yusuf (She/Her/Hers) Director of Programs.
There are four times the Somali refugees in Minnesota than in any other state.
They have made themselves leaders in education, the arts, and politically with a congress person, four state representatives and a member of the Minneapolis City Council
The museum is their efforts to tell their own story to the community and the next generation.
The Hospitality Committee will be serving samples of Sambusa, the savory filled pastry popular in the Somali region. Try beef or lentil versions. The sambusas are handmade by a Somali woman-owned business at a production facility in Midtown Global Market and sold in frozen food sections of food co-ops and soon Lunds/Byerlys.
